that dreaded time of year again for almost every student…BACK TO SCHOOL!!! In the midst of all the crazy pencil and folder shopping, take a couple of minutes to check out your child’s backpack. It might seem like a foreign concept for some of you. I’m pretty sure my mom was never worried about my backpack! There is emerging research showing that improper backpack wearing can cause back pain and abnormal posture. When looking for a backpack, start by comparing the size of the backpack to the size of your child. Backpacks should not hang more than two inches below your child’s waist. This also means that the straps should be tight causing the backpack to be very close to your child’s body. The straps should be wide and cushioned to prevent pain in the shoulders and neck. The weight of your child’s backpack should not be more than 10% of your child’s body weight. Extra weight can also cause neck and back pain. It may also cause abnormal posture which can follow your child throughout life, and potentially cause problems as they age. If you have any questions about this or any other way your child could benefit from chiropractic care, feel free to call the office and we’ll be glad to answer your questions! ~Dr. Stacy
